Disinang Malangmei is a faith leader, who lives with his wife and five children in M. Khunou village, in the Noney District of Manipur. In the year 2018, he contracted TB. As a faith leader, he relied significantly on the offering he got from people for his livelihood. Once the news about his disease spread, people stopped coming out of fear. It was a difficult time for him and his family as even meeting basic needs became a hurdle at times. Fortunately, he continued to receive support from village ASHA who supplied him the medicines regularly. He fought through loss of appetite, lack of nutrition, and episodes of depression which often takes a toll on people suffering from TB. He completed the treatment regime and became free from the shackles of TB.
Mr Malangmei proactively joined the Aashwasan drive once he learnt about the campaign from the Aashwasan outreach team. As he resumed his work as the faith leader, he used his position to help people from his community understand TB, fight the stigmas about the disease, and support each other in the recovery journey if one has TB. He encouraged people to get screened and tested.
