Anamaya is a multi-stakeholder collaborative committed to end preventable deaths among tribal and marginalised communities of India. Our multidisciplinary team engages with problems unique to tribal communities to co-create solutions that strengthen communities and public delivery systems alike.

Background

About 104 million tribal peoples (approx. 8.6% of India's population) live across the nation.

Tribal and indigenous peoples across the globe choose to live close to and in solidarity with nature. They play a significant role in bio-diversity conservation, although most often without much recognition. Understandably, a significant proportion of tribal communities in India also continue to live in hilly, forested, and remote rural areas.
Tribal population
Unfortunately, availability and the quality-of-care decreases as one’s distance from cities increases. Thus, tribal communities living in remote and distributed settlements have restricted access to the predominantly urban-centric public health system.

Public health facilities in rural and remote areas constantly struggle with lack of quality human resources, timely availability of drugs and equipment, inefficient process management, etc. Additionally, socio-cultural discriminations alienate tribal communities even further. High rates of morbidity, mortality, and malnutrition prevails in most tribal areas, especially in central India. Tribal communities continue to have the poorest health status among all the population subgroups in India.

"The tribal community deserves special attention keeping in mind their geographical and infrastructural challenges.”

- The National Health Policy 2017

design1
The same has been reiterated in the report submitted by the Expert Committee on Tribal Health constituted jointly by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Tribal Affairs in 2013. Improving the overall health and wellbeing of tribal communities is crucial to achieve India’s commitment towards the Global Goals. The urgency, complexity, and the scale of the problem necessitates a consolidated and collaborative effort.
Anamaya, the Tribal Health Collaborative, is a unique multi-stakeholder entity committed to facilitate this effort consolidation.
Anamaya works closely with communities and the government, the two most crucial stakeholders to develop an empathetic and efficient public health system informed by the voice of the communities.
It brings together the non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations, philanthropic foundations, national and international funding entities, and enables them to act in a coordinated manner to end preventable deaths among tribal and marginalised communities of India.

The History of Anamaya

design1
Anamaya’s journey was seeded in Asara, a programme dedicated to improving health and nutrition status of pregnant women, mothers, and children living in the tribal blocks of Vishakhapatnam. By ensuring screening services at the doorstep, facilitating patient linkages with the public health system, and developing community-led sustainable nutrition interventions, Asara achieved zero maternal death among the women registered with the programme by 2017. This inspired Piramal Swasthya to aspire to scale Asara’s impact across India. Bridgespan India joined us in this endeavor as a strategic partner. A small team was formed consisting of members from Swasthya and Bridgespan India.
We invested ourselves into extensive secondary research, reached out to experts and organisations who have worked with tribal communities across the nation, listened to community representatives and district officials to learn more about their issues. As we gathered scattered information, anecdotes, experiences, and insights, we learnt that tribal health issues are yet to receive the priority and investment that they deserve. We realized that an additional programme, even at a larger scale, was not the optimal solution. The insights, experiences, and advice collated over three years resulted in the conceptualisation of a multi-stakeholder collaborative that Anamaya is today.
